On one hand I'm glad to see they are only canceling debt held by the department of education, there is no reason the department of education needs to be giving out student loans, it's predatory
Second of all, for the vast majority of everyone in the US this means nothing

What really needs to be done is the student loan system needs to be reformed. This is really just a tiny Band-Aid that doesn't do anything helpful

For the record, this was debt that the US department of education held which was canceled.
And the scope of the debt that was canceled is extremely minor, it really only helps out those who are public employees, permanently disabled or attended a school that went bankrupt.
I think the numbers only put it at like 50,000 people outside the public sector that it helps or something like that

Don't worry, 99.9% of everyone who owes student loan money still owes that same student loan money and 100% of the money owed to the financial sector is still owed to the financial sector

If the lenders don't get paid by someone, they wouldn't lend to anyone, which would mean that people who want things would have to purchase them with their own money. One could argue whether that's a good or a bad thing, since on the one hand people wouldn't be able to go into debt, but on the other hand prices would have to crash hard which would be just as disruptive.

It could also mean that means testing will become a thing again. No more $80,000 loan to get that degree in general education or social work.

Most higher education is obscenely expensive in a large part of that is because student loans are so accessible.
I mean, these federal student loans that are being canceled, the publicly held debt, are mostly Perkins loans from what I've read.
If these loans were regulated by the same laws as any other loans the vast majority of them would be illegal to give to someone.

I mean seriously. It's easier for a poor person to get a student loan than it is to get a roof over their head. Think about that.
I honestly find a lot of similarities between how we do education to how we do our healthcare; just like with the insurance cartels running the healthcare industry, American healthcare is obscenely expensive and there's a lot of parallels with the education industry... A lot of it's just treated as a debt Mill and schools of course are complicit in much of it, because more money means more programs..

Oh don't get me wrong I agree with you, in fact I did exactly what you're describing because I refuse to get into debt for my higher education.

The lending process needs to be reformed because it's predatory. There are no checks on the borrowers ability to pay back, their creditworthiness, or the economic utility of whatever it is they're taking out the loan for.

Simply put, they're creating debt slavery. And this allows other predatory unsavory practices such as universities buying up housing in the surrounding market to rent out as student housing above market value because they know the students will pay for it using all this free money they're getting from their loans
