I would say get yourself the essentials--pack, tent, sleeping bag, etc--but more importantly for prepping just get out there and actually practice the skills. Even if it's to a car campground full of RV boomers, just practice the skills of lighting a fire, cooking on the fire, pitching your tent, tying knots, cutting wood with your knife, saw and ax and learning to maintain those tools. Youtube is your friend for all these things.
Get a Cold Steel Bushman knife, they're the absolute best if you're on a budget. Also, get the Knorr brand meals in the little green bags from Walmart, they're cheap, lightweight and you just need to boil them in water to cook them.
