What winter /out/ hobbies don't cost an arm and a leg to do?

Skiing and snowboarding seem like a rich person's hobby.
Mountaineering requires actual gear.

Is Snowshoeing the only real option?

Sliding snowshoes and BC skis are generally cheaper in terms of boots, skis and bindings and you're not bound by lifts.

While not "cheap", snowmobiling doesn't have to be crazy expensive either.
Find a used sled for $3k or so
Ramp for a pickup, or small open trailer behind an suv
outerwear, gear, helmet
Fuel/oil for the sled isn't terrible, fuel for the car you'd be spending anyways going to ski areas
Sled registration's pretty cheap ($20-50/year)

Beats the shit out of snowshoeing, and you don't have to deal with lifts/ski areas.

Long. But it also heavily depends on conditions. If it's south-facing on a mountainside and getting sun, thawing, then re-freezing overnight, it shouldn't take long. If its the north face and mild weather, yeah, no.

the thing about gear is if you do your research you can buy once and cry once. I have many things that 10+ and some 25+ years old still going strong. sure it may cost 10,000 dollars but over 50 years that's not a significant yearly cost.

if a couple thousand dollars is a big deal maybe it's time for a full time job. not much in this world is free.

Skill issue, I take 2 weeks off work every year in February and camp near Bridger and Whitefish and Tetons. Look for the Quickfish 3i next to a gray 1993 GMC Suburban with Wisconsin plates and come join the manpile.

Cross country skiing is pretty cheap compared to downhill and a lot easier to find places to do it. Also it’s actually a workout which is nice.

I wasnt a liftscum as we called them but even worse I worked in housekreeping. I got to maintain the pools so I was outside a lot and didnt have to clean rooms but I was working with folks who were there for the job not the skiing lol
I lived in resort housing so the drive was only 20 minutes up a mnt in the dark but it was buttfucking cold (-30f). Had to be at work at 6am some days. Got to ski on my lunch hour+ my first year but finagled a much better job the next year that didnt start until 2pm. Skied almost 90 days that year

In my town you can pick up used xc skis and boots for as little at $50 a pair. Literally hundreds of skis selling for this price. That more people dont know about this sport is baffling to me

Skiing is basically jogging but better. Few people want to do exercise. Also, in Québec everyone did some skiing during primary school with shitastic equipment and this basically turned everyone off.

Ski and snowboard if you are not trained by a teacher, you don't have good equipment and going to a ski resort in alps like conditions... is a pain. You need thousands and lot of time. Not to mention accidents.
Mountain sports was always a rich person sport.
