I can get a good deal on wool base layers. Should I go with those or buy Columbia metallic ones. I only have experience with Columbia.

Feet or hands has never been a layering concept.
I was in the -3f windchill (middle tn) just 30 minutes ago with basic fucking socks on.

I do it like this
>is it cold
>wear basic clothing
>is it now getting below 32f
>medium socks, fingerless gloves
>is it now below 0f
>medium socks, full gloves
>is it now -30f
>heavy socks, winter gloves
Your issue is you are specifically doing something that causes constant windchill with no relief in moments that allow the hands to warm back up.

I can tell dude.
Colarado only has record cold temperatures in -60s. Which is still winter glove temperatures, no glove layers.
Alongside just heavy socks.

Might I suggest you lose some weight, if you lose enough the diabetes should go into remission and your fingers and toes would stop freezing to death.

Is it only me or do long johns not actually work.
Like I can put them on and not feel any warmer.
I don't know what to do because I can wear them, then some thick insulated pants, then ski pants over that and my legs will still be cold.
My pair is 80% merino wool and not cheap, like 80 burger units

Are they big enough? If they are too tight, they might restrict circulation and have an opposite effect
However it sounds like you really just have poor warmth regulation. Try cold showers and baths and more physical exercise

If anything I have poor cold regulation. Anything over 6c is no jacket needed. But I mean that with wind or colder than like -10c and it seems like extra layers does nothing anymore
