It's a really bad place to live remotely. The islands are seismically active and your caves will collapse and seal you alive. The locals are poor and black, and they scavenge in the wilds. If they catch you, you will disappear. The secret to the hermit is he moved nomadically at night and lived in lean-to's we would find but nobody saw him.
I suggest some other island. Kauai has spaces near the falls where people live remotely with goats, pigs and chickens. You can grow anything there, water is abundant and there is (dangerous) sea access for seafood. Fruits grow everywhere, although you will be disgusted by guava because all the fruit flies the dropped guava bring.
