I'm going on wednesday for an easy one. It's time to test my new winter bag and get some stove time in. I am actually just going to hop over a fence from public land into a place with 3-4 small woodlands. Only a 20 minute walk from the local town and through a few winter fields, but I should have all the isolation I need. It's unlikely I'll encounter anyone there, especially in the night, so I am looking forward. Might even go into town for a few drinks if I can find a very private spot though getting a woman back there is unlikely. Hey babe that I just met, want to come sit in my tent in the middle of winter? I'll be nice! Heheh, but you never know.

I'm thinking about doing a local trail (the last 1000ft or so are well snowed in at this point) I regularly do as a day hike, but as an overnight. There's some cool hikes in the vicinity I could do morning of day 2 too. But I've never been snow camping and I have one of those non-free standing tents. I hear they can work ok though. Do I need to do anything special beyond packing warmer clothes and a warmer sleeping bag? My quilt is 20 degrees but it might dip a little below that, will wearing my belay parka be enough to make the difference? Or is it smarter to use it as a blanket? (Yes, I am scared of a little cold)

Long, warm underwear is usually the best for sleeping in quilts/sleeping bags.
And you'll need a decent air mattress. Nothing's worse than having to sleep on a cold ground.

The coldest I had so far was somewhere South of -24 Celsius, during a snowstorm in the Alps. I can't say how cold it really was with windchill.

There is an interesting topological curiosity 2 hours from me.
It's a large sinkhole at 1270 meters altitude in the Alps that is the coldest place in Europe. I've thought about going there when the weather is right for it. It's also a 4 1/2 kilometer hike with 800 meters of elevation gain to get there, so quite a demanding one. I really want to know what it's like there.

About to go in a couple weeks. Just gotta buy some food and grab some firewood -so the forest kikes dont rape me for burning forest wood.

But honestly: You can't fuck it up.
I thought like that and read advice like that before going /out the first time but eventually came to realize I can either be stuck at home improving. y setup or trying to remember processes and knots or just go out there and wing it.
Whole week, never stopped more than an hour before nightfall, usually after dark. Sometimes woke up to realise I set up not as I intended. Yet I always had comfortable sleep. Just take a flashlight with you.

Sitting around in the dark is boring. 0-degree or lower bags are expensive and take up too much closet space for what little use they'd get.
If you fuck up 3-season camping, you have a bad weekend. If you fuck up winter camping, you die.

Can someone help me gear plan for an upcoming trip? Going camping for the first time in a while. Hiking for a few hours to a lean-to, spending a night or two then heading back. The only gear I have is a klymit sleeping pad (1.3R). I'm trying to do this on a budget and wondering what else to get under $250. I think I can borrow a bag, and won't need my own cooking gear.

I'm thinking a nemo foam pad and one of those military sleeping systems (bivy+2 bags you can layer). Heavy as hell but together that's only $200. Legit or dumb?

Last time I went winter camping it got down to 10-20 f. I had a sleeping bag directly on the snow since I’m kind of retarded and it was much warmer and snow free at the base of the mountains (vermont). Still had a blast but I wasn’t prepared and could barely sleep

Is a single foam roll under the sleeping bag enough to stay warm or do you guys also lay down pine branches et cetera?

You are an animal lol. On snow I do a sleeping bag on an inflatable on a z pad. It doesn't matter what you pick as long as your r value is at least ~6. Multiple layers stack by addition. You done fucked up bringing nothing at all, no wonder you didn't sleep. You could die doing that man.

Lads I'm pretty sold on camping with a 12v heated blanket. Like it takes the edge off for sure and it's far lighter than a tent stove.
I use a 100Wh power bank and it will power the blanket for the whole night

But the problem is it's like a blanket for child, I thought about maybe getting another and sewing them together but either direction makes it too long or not enough.
Does anyone do this? Any suggestions on a good blanket?

I used to hate winter camping as a kid.
When I went to university I stopped doing it completely and became a purely 3 season camper.
Since last winter however, I started introducing it back into the schedule.
Just went out for a weekend of camping on Lake Erie in -30 C temps.
It was great.

I have this idea to fight condensation by breathing in a pipe that goes outside the tent.
But you have to wear mask and connect it to the pipeans isolate it. but the mask could be very uncomfortable.
I don't know.
One night is enough to get a frost layer on your tent wall from the inside.

If it is cold enough and it does. not melt, you can scrape it but still you get snowy frost inside.
