I usually advise a 6, especially since you're prioritizing as many types of presentation as possible. A 6 can still make a delicate presentation with a small dry fly, and surprisingly small fish will still give you plenty of bend, but the extra mass in the line will help a lot with heavier nymph rigs and especiallg streamers. As for action, youre basically stuck with moderate fast at your price point, but imo thats the most universal action anyways

I second Skid's 6wt rec. My 4wt is great for dry flies, but really struggles casting even moderately heavy nymphs like #6 pat's rubber legs. My 6wt on the other hand can cast a #16 griffith's gnat, no problem and handles heavy nymphs well too. If it's within your budget, I know this is adding up(fly fishing always does...lol), but I definitely prefer my Echo traverse over my lift, but you're looking at $250 vs ~$190 for that. Lift has a medium action, traverse medium fast.

depend on the fish you want to target and the flies you want to throw at it
also some type of flies will be heavier or have more wind resistance, so you want more strength than usually prescribed for the size
unless you're planning on fishing small stuff on small flies you shouldn't hesitate going for the 8wt
but if you find something cheap second hand between 5 and 8wt it should cover most basic needs regardless

Its amazing how finicky fish can be and how switching from one fly to an ever so slightly different fly WHOSE DIFFERENCES CAN ONLY BE DISCERNED UNDER A DAMN MICROSCOPE can be the difference between going home empty or hitting bag limit.

How are you struggling to throw a Pat's Rubber Legs on a 4 WT? If that's a problem for you, you must really struggle with a beadhead woolly bugger.
Echo Lift Kits have gone up to $250. Echo had a price change a few months ago. I don't know what Traverse Kits cost, but they've surely gone up as well.

I was fairly new to fly fishing the last time I tried. It might be easier now that I can cast better. But it felt like the 4w lift didn't have enough backbone. The tip was too....springy? But like a weak spring, not a strong spring. It was a #6 bead head pat's with a nickel bead 7 turns of .25 lead wire. I never tried it again on that rod. But I have thrown it on my 6w traverse and it acts as it's supposed to. I'll try it again on the lift sometime. But I've pretty much otherwise relegated it to dry flies and #14 or smaller nymphs. And it does a great job at throwing those.

Awesome! Pull the trigger now!! They will not be selling them at that price for long. My store kept the kits at $190 until we sold out. An Echo Lift Kit can be the only rod you ever own. It's probably the best thing to have ever cone to fly fishing. I'm the kind of person who likes to buy once, cry once. When I get something that's better than what I had, I ignore the old thing. That's not the case with my Echo Lift Kit. I have a Sage R8 Core ($1100), and I still break out my Lift. Get some 9 ft leaders; these are the only leaders I fish as a spring creek fisherman, and get some tippet. I like to fish light (5x and 4x). Others don't.

Ditch the 6x and get 3x instead. Unless you're fishing #28 midges you really dont need anything uhder 5x for anything. Also cjnsider getting some 1x or 2x leaders and tippet for streamer fishing. I always try to use the heaviest line i can get away with.

I'm the guy who told you to buy now and talked about lighter setups. You don't want 6X, especially as a beginner. What I would do is buy an extra leader for 5X and 4X, since I fish them the most. You might get tangled in a tree and lose most of your leader. I'm imagining you can't just go to the fly shop and get a new one. The other thing I highly recommend are the smallest tippet rings you are capable of using. They stop your leader from shortening and make adding tippet easier.
If it is true you have no fly shops near you, I would suggest buying some flies. I advise against RIO (don't worry about leader and tippet) and Solitude, based on personal experience, but there are other shitty fly brands I have heard of. Umpqua and MFC are the best. Get some nymphs and streamers. Skip the dry flies and floatant, but if you are really keen on surface action thus time of year, get a couple tiny foam beetles. Also, get some of the smallest airlock indicators. I hate them, but many people like them, and they can be good for beginners.

Carp are by far the best fish to catch on that list.

I'm with the other two, skip the 6x. Get 4x and 5x. I use 4x most of the time and only go down to 5x if I'm using #18 or 20. And if you think you'll be throwing streamers, get a Rio big nasty and some 1x or 2x tippet. Tippet rings are also great for preserving your leaders. Just add one at the end of the second taper and tie on your tippet from there. That's for nymphs and swung fly leaders, skip the tippet ring for dry fly leaders.

Anger? No. Confusion as to why you would want to intentionally target trash fish, yes. But if you want to fish for carp, hey, have fun. If you plan on eating it, here's a recipe I heard that works well for them. Clean carp and split it in two, no need to fillet or depone. Place the carp on cardboard and set it on the grill, set to low. Cook for 30-40 minutes until internal temp of at least 170F. Then toss the carp in the trash and eat the cardboard.

Also poached or baked with a bit of salt, pepper, and (optionally) lemon zest is the best way to enjoy a fish. If you eat your fish batter fried, you like the taste of batter and sneed oil, not the taste of fish.

depends on how you view it. for me it's like pokemon, trying to catch as many different types as I can and big specimens of each. it's also about exploring new places. aside from that, it's learning a useful survival skill, and most importantly, it's an outdoor hobby that gets you fresh air, sun, and away from vidya addiction. you can do it alone or with friends. add a kayak to the mix and you can explore even further, and get light exercise. half the time I go out in my kayak with a rod I don't even end up fishing, but just exploring.

What are your favorite flies made by Umpqua or some other company? Obviously, I'm not asking about a GB Hare's Ear but something unique that you like to buy or tie on your own. My favorites are a Pops Bugger and Mayers Mini Leech Jig. It's much, much cheaper to tie your own. Never buy them.

That has never ever happened to me. I knot various poundages of braid every day at work, and it flies a million miles and hour through my fingers under pressure. How did you manage to do that? Picking up a fish by holding braid, that makes sense why you'd get cut, but tying knots?
In other news, we're getting a big snow storm. It's surely going to melt, but I've got a strong feeling this will be the best ice season in a decade. I hate ice fishing, but I'll go if I have an opportunity.

Drowning dry flies intentionally is a thing. Im pretty sure ive fished for bluegill with a fairly large (#16) drowned griffiths gnat with success.
