Honestly I'm not sure. It doesnt feel right, it lacks a whip, very much feels like a pool noodle. I have examined for damage but I dont see anything.

here's a bunch of reel i have sitting, the galion12R i did the other day, it's a low cost brand of mitchell (when it was still french and good) very simple and minimalist design but not bad by any mean, and a bunch of mitchells and luxors, the 324 is missing the anti reverse switch because it was a fit in and probably fell off, replacement i found online got a screw to hold it so i assume mine is one of the earliest models
i got a second luxor model A and a second luxor supreme that are in a drawer taken apart waiting for me to buy some paint cleaner and new paint for them for a full restoration project

Very cool. I also bought a boat load of old reels a while ago which took my relatively small collection to one im starting to get a bit embarrassed about, this is only the stuff I think looks cool so have out on display.

My issue is I can't seem to get used to left hand retrieve, so most of the cool old spinners are not super fun for me to fish. Luckily the guy I bought them from was also lefty so had a bunch of South paw Mitchells

the only non french reels i'd like to have would be a penn greenie and an ambidex (for the historical value of being the reel that popularized the handle that can be switched)
i also have a 306 somewhere and a bunch of no name plastic reels from the late 90s early 00s, and of course modern ones i got myself
also got a few fly reels, an old barebones mitchell, a jw young & son with a multiplier gear (still baffle me it didn't became the standard for fly reels) and some automatic reels
not a big fan of baitcasters

I have the one ambidex, I haven't actually fished it yet. It weighs a fucking ton, and I don't love that the bail doesn't have any kind of roller, and the drag surface area is miniscule. I don't have any kind of idea what fish/line/presentation it would shine on.

yeah i've seen it, no roller is fine imo, my galion is like that too and it's fine, it's a simple freshwater reel so i'd put some mono between 12-15lb, not too big, strong enough for most fishes, mostly for cast and retrieve spinners or lures, would fine with live/dead bait too i guess

I got my monthly Smitty's box in this week. A couple new patterns. The beginner pattern is called a balanced leech. It's basically a bugger pattern on a jig hook with a weighted head on a pin out in front of the hook eye. It's supposed to hang flat instead of head down. Included materials are: size 10 jig hooks, 3.2mm tungsten beads, a bag of pins, 6/0 uni thread in white, white marabou, pearl ice dubbing, orange prism dubbing and smoke gray dubbing(extra for if you want to tie a variant, not used in this pattern)

The intermediate pattern for this month is a cray fish pattern, the craw daddy. It looks like it should do a good job at imitating a crawdad. Included materials are: size 6 jig hooks, 4.5mm slotted tungsten beads, 6/0 uni thread in dark brown, brown copper wire in size sm, felt, rubber legs, orange rabbit zonker and rusty craw dubbing.

The balanced leech was a pretty easy tie. Nothing too complicated. Tying in the pin with the bread was pretty easy. I probably could have gone a little denser with the dubbing.

This was a fun pattern to tie. I don't do much fishing on the bottom around here, too many rocks to get caught between. But there are some lakes a bit further out that have good muddy bottoms. Not sure when I'll get out there next. I could probably use them around here too. I'll just expect to lose one or two.

I think you'd get bad hooksets. I would have a small snap swivel attached to the spinner, and further up, I would have a bigger swivel, a bead, and a weight. I want everything inline.

some people do that, with a shorter sinker line and more swivels, prone to tangling and snagging
you can just put a sliding sinker on the line ahead of the spinner for the same effect without the issues

It would work, but in my experience the big Spring flood is mostly unfishable. I don't think fish are hanging out in the ripping chocolate milk.

So I got a bunch of crappie jigheads from walmart and the paint is chipping off of them like crazy. Is this normal for cheap ass jigs? If not, should I pay the price for nice VMC or Northland shit? $7 for 4 jigs seems expensive.

First open water rod from roadside scrap is coming together. I'm still waiting for ferrules to come in from China so I can make multi piece rods, in the meantime this one is a 5'6" casting rod which I guess will be bfs style since they seem to like those slow whippy fiberglass rods. I've picked up like 4 busted snow shovels from the side of the road for handle material.
