I said it was a rough estimate (a guess)
>Who the fuck spends $20 a day on food?>My family of four spends maybe $300 a month on foodAt home, I probably don't spend more than $300 / month on food myself. but that is at home with the luxury and convenience of a refrigerator/freezer, lotsa cupboards and storage space to buy and store things in economical packages and amounts and be able to store things for longer periods of time.
when you are on the road travelling by car, bus, or on foot it is a lot less convenient to buy things each day. it is not as easy to always access the types of stores where you can buy things economically.
I was also trying to factor in a certain amount of extra for those times when OP might want to stop at restaurant or something and have a nice big steak dinner served up in a nice comfy setting as opposed to the usual ramen over a campfire, etc.
I have lived on the road I have lived out of a truck I have lived out of a backpack. when you are talking about how much food you need each day (breakfast, lunch, dinnere and snacks, etc.) one can easily spend $20/day on average. again I still say this is a rough estimate but I do not think it is extraordinary
