i get the attraction, i have daydreamed about living in a van myself. an especially attractive option when i was hitting bottom career wise a few years ago. the idea was to move around my AO in a stealth camper van and do bar work (which i was already doing at the time) to provide enough income to keep gas in the van, food on the table, and plenty of booze.
the reality though, is quite ugly. usually when i read these "im going to be homeless" stroke fests they are written by kids living with their parents. nothing wrong with that, but if you have never been out on your own you are probably not making a realistic assessment of homelessness.
i have worked with the homeless, and also lived and worked in an area lousy with bums. they are all fucked, and their "society" is repugnant. Extreme drug abuse, mental disease, violence, and crime are rampant.
even if you make every effort to avoid these people, you still have to make some money, which means participation in bum earning. pan handling, metal scrapping, and can redemption are all territorial bum enterprises and you can expect competition (even violent competition, because some of those bums are trying to get enough money for more crack)
some employers will let hobos work, but you will again, be forced to work with a bunch of hobos and be contaminated by their grossness.
this has been touched on, but if you are desperate try anything else. for one, even an unskilled fuck can get a job that pays enough for rent and bachelor living. there are also plenty of fields that love desperate young men. if you are tough and willing to work, you can make a small fortune in the oil boom towns of ND. or join the military if you are clean.
