You'll get kudo points if you bring your own leaf rake, bags, and ask for the leaves if you rake the yard. Older people's yards are great for that. The leaves will be great to use as mulch on top of the soil. If you want to compost them, I highly recommend shredding them. My method of shredding them is adding them to the chicken coop litter to let the chickens do the shredding. Other people use a leaf vacuum which shreds as it sucks the leaves up.
To answer your question, yes you can take humus and leaf mould from the woods. You will still need to amend it with clay or sand depending on the plant types you want to grow with it.

I really wanted to start making goat cheese, when I became a farmer, but I dropped all dairy from my diet. The same thing happened with alcohol. Still, they are fun things to make even if you don't partake.
