I started in Customer Service (college degree, few years as a bicycle shop manager, outdoor experience) and used my skills to get promoted within a few months. The pay is meh but the perks are fucking great.
Keep a lookout on outdoor industry jobs. A few places are great for a foot in the door to the industry as a whole. I know a lot of people who started at sea to summit for example and then used that experience to work elsewhere (Backpackers pantry, Kelty, Thule, etc.).
