Proper innawoods living REQUIRES gear, it is part of what makes us human. Look at otzi, even a super minimalist ancient human carried a plethora of gear, medicine, clothing, fuel and food with backups and repair
At the very least you need:
Storm shelter
Groundsheet to prevent moisture transmission to insulation
Sleeping insulation
Isolation from cold floor
Dry set of clothing for static rest
A means to carry and keep the above dry
Insulation for moving, windblocking, prevention of chill from fresh cold rain
Calories
Sunblocking clothing or substance
Protective footwear
In some parts water is sparse so container is needed
Cooking also increases survivability by morale and introduction of pre-"digested" food at a higher temperature that core, and isn't really a "luxury" as much as a necessity in harsh climes.
Ancestors required these things just as much as we do, perhaps they were slightly tougher, more acclimated with faster metabolisms but thermodynamics are thermodynamics
