My only point is that technical outerwear is not strictly necessary for the hobby, and that people who spend significant money on gear give newcomers the impression that they'd literally die on a long hike wearing jeans largely to justify their own expenditure.
You say you have plenty of pricey technical stuff, as do I. Proper gear is better than khakis, and we should keep wearing what we have, but we also shouldn't delude ourselves or others into thinking that they NEED another gore hardshell.
