I did a fuck load more research on puuko knives and I found out basically every brand making them uses lauri/polar/etc blanks (which don't have a true 0* scandi grind from the factory) and the main difference between them all is looks fit and finish. So basically the $20-40 basic ones are great knives but the expensive ones you'd expect a lot more from. One of the makers doesn't use blanks but they have heat treat issues as of recent.
The vintage puukkos used a much less simplified blade profile that was harder to make, and they weren't all just generic blanks.
How much this all matters on what's effectively a rat tail pocket knife is up to the beholder, but for me the answer is like you said: vintage.
