I think maybe it's because of the internet. It seems like a lot of pipe smokers now-a-days found the hobby because of the internet so we are exposed to more voices telling us the same advice on exactly HOW to maintain your pipe. On the other hand more people smoked pipes back in the day so they shoulda had a ton of people to show them how to take care of the pipe. basically I have no idea.
