Melons have huge leaves and could be a compromise (not full shade but a 70%+ coverage maybe).
Cannabis is illegal in my country. I'm sure I'd be able to legally grow one without thc/cbd but I don't like having the attention and having to explain it all to the police..
Bamboo: I think that in order to cover a lot of surface, I need a lot of plants. A single one might not take loads of space for roots but many will.

If peas can't stand the heat maybe I should look at something like the beans in the pic, but I need to find out how much space the roots need. Ideally I'd grow hydroponic to save space and water.
