I've never been to Portland but I hear it's quite a similar situation to Denver. Dramatic rise in population, high cost of living, homeless people increasing. There are so many places in the west that are perfect for /out/. Rather than limit yourself to a couple big cities, apply for jobs relevant to your career in a lot of smaller towns. It's hard to get a career in a specific city the smaller it is, but if you cast a wide net it shouldn't be too difficult.
