Remember every 1000 feet in elevation is a roughly 3 degree temperature drop. It does get cold in the desert in the winter, especially the higher you go.
This is a photo of Four Peaks... it can be seen from pretty much anywhere in the valley. It reaches about 7500 feet, and gets snow in the winter.
In the summer it makes a PERFECT day trip to take your kids, your guns, a sack lunch, an offroad, and some hiking boots.
You start the drive out on the Bee-Line Highway, and turn off on the right when you are in the shadow of the mountain and coming down a long two mile down hill slope of the mountain. You tear ass in your offroad and have a bit of fun... Stop somewhere in the lower desert areas and shoot your guns as long as it is still early morning and not too hot out. Then you get back in the car and drive up the road to four peaks. You can then hike four peaks through various intermediate to difficult trails. I took my daughter up there when she was only five. We only did like two miles, but she liked it.
Also, the tops of the mountains is all pine forests, and a very enjoyable close getaway from the heat of the valley below.
