The moment you start sending your energy over a distance of a hundred miles, it starts losing its viability though. Power lines have to be maintained just like power facilities do, and the loss of energy over extended distances is going to cause issues. Add to that if a plant needs to have part or all of it taken down for temporary maintenance, it can play hell on the local grid. It's much better to distribute power generation when you enter rural communities to protect against black/brownouts.
