Been wanting a new caster, tried some of the new models SLX, Curado DC, Tatula elite, etc. etc. All of them are most just ok. It seems like most of them have systems that are terrified of backlash and make them retard-proof slowing the spool at all costs. Hear from old timers that 'they don't make good baitcasters anymore' and pick up an almost 20 year old, made in Japan shimano chronarch on a whim for a hundred bucks. This fucker casts like a miracle (further than any of the new ones I have on the same rod/line), doesn't backlash unless you try to be really dumb with it, and it feels great. It's a little heavier than the new ones but that's the only thing I can think of that is worse.
So was there really a golden age of reels?
