I've done a couple roadtrips to the northwest, and recommend stopping in Badlands Nat'l park, Mt. Rushmore and Devil's Tower along the way. The first day is going to suck no matter what, but it's worth spending extra time on the second and third days to see this stuff. Badlands are 100% worth driving through. Mt. Rushmore isn't terribly exciting, but it's worth seeing in person at least once. Devil's Tower is also a 10/10, 11/10 if you watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind before.
If you follow this route, about halfway through South Dakota you start seeing billboard every mile or so for "Wall Drug Store." This goes on for about 50 miles or so before the exit. Take the exit. It's a massive complex of endless hokey tourist trinket gift-shops in the middle of nowhere. Also worth a stop since it's just off the highway and will get some laughs.
Anyways, adding these stops will only add a few hours to the drive, but will improve it tons. The views will also be better as you'll be going through the Black Hills of South Dakota instead of the cornfields of Nebraska.
