Sure they might only burn a day or two, but you can just refill them. Also I dont think you have to melt it. If you are going to use pre made candles for wicks. Just tamp it down on something that it won't shater on and stick the candle in. I still think that the wood gas stove is a good idea for OP. Just so that he has something to cook and heat with that basically costs no money for fuel.

I used basically one of these to make 90% of the holes in my first one. It took like ten minutes and was foolproof. I really do recommend the stabelizer legs and something like a plate under it to prevent starting an accidental fire. A barbecue lighter also works absolutely bitchen for starting them.
I'm surprised nobhas suggested a penny stove either. You can make one out of a soda can and run it on 90% rubbing alcohol.
