The reason is simple: it's much easier to produce.
The first "tanto"-style knives were Chinese in origin. Big surprise. Some company figured that it could cut down production time greatly by going from a smooth, round adge between the blade and the point to a simple two part straight sharpening.
Some high profile companies later adopted it thinking it looked cool, hence many people started to think that maybe, it served some purpose seeing how these great companies suddenly started to release several tanto models.
Well, I have yet to find a single reason that would justify its very existence other than "it's easier to produce".
