Note that the area inbetween the villages is clear and worth hiking on agricultural gravel roads that are not open to public traffic. In america, in most regions, every road is paved, driven on by cars, and dotted with buildings. I guess that's part of the reason americans bitch about their national parks being overrun - these parks are the only places where hiking is actually fun. In europe, most people just walk (or drive) out of their villages and hike the forests, orchards or meadows inbetween.
