We were driving back to Denver from a trip into the Rockies and Utah. We were on I-70 about to cross the Continental Divide, so we pulled off the highway to go see Loveland Pass.
I've you've never visited it, it's just a winding road up the side of the mountain and over the top. It's there because trucks carrying hazardous materials aren't permitted to drive through the tunnel under the mountain, for safety reasons. At the the parking area, there's a little trail you can take to climb further up to the top of Mt. Sniktau.
So obviously... I'm going to climb it. The peak is 13,240, but Loveland pass is already at about 12,000', so it should be a pretty quick climb. I get about halfway up to the ridge, and HOLY SHIT lightning strikes the mountain on the other side of the valley. We're well above the tree line, so I'm basically the tallest thing out there, other than the mountains themselves. I started running down the mountain as lightning kept striking around me, and I was sure I would be killed.
But obviously, I made it back to my car...
