also, since you almost got it down to bare metal and almost polished, how about trying a rust-blued finish? decent and natural way to prevent corrosion:
>soak in vinegar for 5 min>paint with hydrogen peroxide and salt>let it rust>steam or boil in water for 5-10 min>gently scrape with #0000 steel wool>repeat 5-10 times until no new rust forms>coat with oil and let cure for a day
