There are times I go to the local stealership because they'll have what I need, even though I'm paying retail prices for it, and I can go ride....
+1 for digging up PN's yourself. Some parts guys are good, others don't know shit.
There's also superceded parts or alternative replacements ... I know what'll fit and what won't because I'm fairly knowledgable about my machines, but the guy at the parts counter probably doesn't know the lower shaft from a '16 will still fit a '12, even though the assembly is different.
Service manual for the vehicle is well worth the money.
