There are also a lot of applications and sub-groups within the hobby, so it may be worth articulating some of your goals. Do you want to chat with your friends on hunting trips? Call out/monitor resource road frequencies? Contact people on other continents? Talk through satellites? Access the local repeaters? Build your own low-power circuits?
