Whilst I don't disagree that the scouts should probably get the penknife first, as a leader I hate this rule, we should be teaching them to use the right tool for the right job and if they've been taught to use a knife safely I've no issue with my troop using a sheath knife, hell, to be honest, I'd be happier. A fixed blade knife doesn't catch fingers nearly half as much.
On top of that there is the simply fun of the kids comparing their knives, what's the point if everybody just has the same old SAK?
Any other leaders from other countries have any opinions on this? Is Scouting Ireland just a little strange?
