And when I rig live worms on a "baitholder hook" I will stick the hook through the very tip of the worm and kinda thread the hook through the worm so the (live) worm goes up the shank of the hook and then hook it through once more in the middle. Ends up where like have the worm is dangling and the hook goes through it twice. Otherwise they can get off. There are a million ways to do it though.
For rubber worms, I normally do Texas rigs. Cast them out, let them fall to the bottom, and hop them along the bottom with 1-3 second pauses between hops. Pic related will show a Texas rigged soft plastic worm (I think).
And setting the hook- if you are using live worms on a bobber, you want to let the fish drag the bobber under the water for a couple seconds before you tighten up the line and yank on the rod a little to set the hook. With Texas rigs, kinda the same thing. When you feel a bite, give the fish a second or two to grab the whole bait, then tighten up the line real quick and yank the rod. Mepps with a regular retrieve sort of set the hook themselves, as do crankbaits.
