>>2523867The more advanced APRS handhelds can relay the signal for you to a repeater, like a mesh network. If you go outside with other people, you can also keep track of each other and send messages using it without a repeater, that's how some SARs groups know where each other are located.
All in all, handhelds are pretty useless if you have no friends or other people to go outside with, if you are solo a PLB or Garmin InReach would be best.
