>>1805962Probably about 1. I have these cherry dark tomatoes spaced at 24" with some poly ropes across so they don't fall over and can climb. Even at barely to the second string (19" height for string, plant height is ~28", third string is ~26" so it's really only using the first two as the last two inches of plant are floppy and don't really hold in place) and the plants are growing all the way out to the post in the middle in between each plant (between the lettuce). Each plant has to grow 12" out to touch each other and they are. They grow quick. In your situation, if you prune each one and get rid of the branches growing inwards towards each other and also plant each at opposite edges, maybe two. Highly recommend a railing or fence behind the plant or even better, put a post in the dirt and use it to keep your plant upright. MIGardener should have something on tomatoes and how to make sure they stay up. Keep leaves out of the dirt, make sure they don't get dirt on them, and give it good airflow or else you'll get blight.
Planning a garden can be deceiving; It always looks like you have way more room than you actually do. Plan it on paper, or even better, on the computer like I did, and it's way worse. "Oh yeah, I can fit 27 tomatoes in here" until you get them home and see how small the space is and how large the young plants are.
