Serious question, where does one hike that a GPS or compass is actually necessary? All the hiking areas I've been to have had marked trails that you just follow with not much opportunity to leave them due to the terrain and little reason to actively use a map while hiking let alone a GPS or compass. Land nav sounds fun, but I'm at a loss as to where one would be able to really do it that doesn't involve trespassing in someone's field or driving a few hours away (which feels like diving head first).

Any recommendations for stainless cookware? Using a whisk when making curry puts a significant amount of wear on the coating on my current aluminum cookware. It'd be best if I could get a set with a 1-1.5 quart pot and 2 pans, with a lid that could be used on one of the pans.

On a side note, how well do the plastic plates I see for camping purposes work in the cold? I've been on the lookout for some enamelware plates to go with the bowls and cups that I have, but all the ones I've seen are quite large compared to my current cookware and it would be nice to have something that nests well with my cookware.

How many BTUs should one be looking for in a camp stove? I'm looking at purchasing a gas powered stove for cooking for 1-2 people when car camping during fire bans and was looking at a model that's capable of putting out 10,000 BTUs, but then I read that hot plates and electric stovetops like I've cooked on for most my life normally put out less than 7,000 BTUs. Now I'm wondering how much I really need since I almost never turn a burner up at home outside of quickly heating larger quantities of water than could fit in any pot I'd bring camping.

How necessary is heating the top of a baking vessel like a dutch oven? Is it only necessary if what you're baking is in contact with the bottom of the vessel and not in a separate pan that's held slightly off the bottom of the vessel? I'm wondering because I was just reading about "dry baking" in a pot which is basically steam baking without the water and apparently doesn't require setting coals on top of the pot like one would with a dutch oven in order to achieve even heating. Does this really work well or are there some trade-offs that you're making by baking that way?
