For me (op) it's a reminder of how things used to be, and how people used to put effort into things that they made and what they did. The Vikings are a testament to what humans are really capable of, having had trade routs all the way down into Asia, and then sailing to England in their small boats. I'm a pretty strong believer in the "old ways". Not necessarily that I will go to Valhalla if I die in battle, but I think that notion helps me live in the way I want to die. The Norse believed that each person had a set time of death, and that no matter what they did or where they went in life, they would not live one second less or one second longer than they were meant to. I think that's a pretty cool thing to live by.
