Half of the time we walked beside a horse, other half we rode horseback since horses carried all the stuff. We slept in sleeping bags on tarpaulin.
Horses, since they were used to electrical fence with 2 500 volts, they knew really well that touching fence wire is no-no.
So on every evening we were going to find trees on meadow (horses needs lot of grass) that were next to each other, then we stretch out long rope around 3-4 or more trees to make fence. Horses never escaped and were never hurt by this way. Bears and wolves are rare here in East Europe, so never attacked.
And food? Grass, grass, grass, a lot of it. We took bag of oat with us and were able to buy it in towns. Horses get energy from oat. Then plenty of water. As we traveled near rivers and ponds all the time, this wasn't problem for us.
