>>2192025I blacked out while freediving once. I was crabbing in maybe 45 feet of water, underneath a wharf, and ended up being down too long. I realized during my ascent that I wasn't going to make it. As I started to go unconscious, the last thing I remember is feeling guilty about all the people I was going to hurt by dying. After I went out, a lot happened. I saw my family, friends, and my girlfriend, and a few scenes from my life. Then I was having a conversation with someone. We were arguing about whether or not I had blacked out, and if I was dead. Then, in this dream state, I felt myself cough. Just the sensation of coughing, the vibration of it, like an earthquake almost. After this, I realized I was alive, and woke up. I had blacked out just a few feet from the surface, and my buoyancy had carried my head above the water. The first breath I took was partially seawater, hence the cough. My dive buddy was just a few feet away when I woke up. I was very happy to see her, and the sun.
I actually recorded it on my GoPro, I was out for about 10 seconds. Its unusual to remember blackouts. Often times people don't even realize they've happened after waking up, but I remembered all of it, maybe because I knew it was coming.
