As for how I carry the .44, it gets it's own pocket in my ribzwear and sits in there safely snugged into a cheap generic BLACKHAWK! iwb holster ($15).
Ribzwear is easily one of the best purchases I've made for backpacking. It's like a civilian version of the military LBE.
I got it initially as a means to conceal carry with a backpack. Something I was struggling to figure out.
It has proved very comfortable and useful. I put my water filter, a small platypus bag, poncho tent, compass, wallet/I.D., phone, paracord, a couple energy bars and firearm.
It stays on when I take the pack off so I keep what I consider kind of the essentials in it and I can easily access everything in while on the go.
