Do you enter the waters like surfers do?I'm fortunate enough to have a public boat ramp around the block from me, so I enter the water by putting the kayak in, walking it into the water so that the water comes up to my knee, then climb in. If for some reason you're grounded once you sit in the kayak you can detatch your oars, flip them so that the paddles are facing upward, dig the pole-ends into the ground and pull - thrusting you and the 'yak forward and into deeper water.
For the waves, I face them head-on so that the wave and my kayak form a 'T'. If you let the waves hit your kayak broadside it'll rock you and if it's a big wave it may tip you. Facing it head-on makes it more like a roller-coaster.
