There was never anything counterculture about modern hipsters. They appropriated elements of their style from various countercultures but from the very start they were always whitebread middle class suburban kids playing at being cool downtown artsy types, mostly listening to mainstream pop bands that were pretending to be "indie". They're much more like preppies than like the original hipsters.
