Gonna be renting 7 acres of old overgrown new england farmland soon lads. Can't tell you how good the feels are.
Here's the plan, starting in August.
>mow as close to the soil as possible, trimmings stay where they fall
>untreated heavy kraft paper where I want my rows
>dump a couple inches compost or manure on top
>another layer of paper and compost/manure
I've had great luck using heavy paper for killing sod and weeds before, it's cheap and easy to roll out as well. Any other methods of bed prep you all would like to propose or other suggestions for the spring?
I figure I'll probably try the growhole approach, dig a couple 3x3x3 holes before the ground freezes and toss in a few lbs worth of foodscraps and leaves. Plastic sheeting or glass over top (ideally I'll pile the soil on the north side so its angled south) and I figure I'll be in a good spot for starting seedlings nice and early come spring.
Picrel is the stream that runs along the property line. Pretty sure I have water rights--y'all think a ram pump or solar-powered electric would be better longterm?
