Its durable, but certainly less useful than a modern equivalently sized pack. No hip belt, skinny little leather straps, heavy as fuck. Its a nice decoration, but I feel for the poor guys who were issued this thing. I think a recent model, used pack is a better choice. And by recent, I mean late 90s, early 2000s. You can go back a decade and get a good discount on used stuff without dipping into "vintage" territory. My GF spent pocket change on a old Camelbak Mule for day walks, and it is perfectly serviceable (with a new bladder of course). Gear of a similar era won't break the bank, and will probably function for another decade.
