Bring an instrument if you can play one. Harmonicas, ukuleles, and banjos are all cheap; they're also easy to learn and transport. Books are always good to take - just put them in plastic bag to keep them dry and clean. Notebooks, like

I know you're probably anti-drug considering your original post, but alcohol and drugs can lead to incredible experiences in the wilderness. I wouldn't recommend psychedelics like

Otherwise you should go with a friend, or bring a flashlight and explore at night, or simply bask in the beauty of the wilderness.
