I thought I'd try a dedicated gardening thread before bothering /diy/
I dig this idea.
It's sexy and practical and I'm growing a potato in my pants just thinking about the yield.
I don't quite "get" the theory behind it though. The first site I see talking how to do it says you basically plant potatoes on the bottom first, then cover them with more and more dirt until it fills the barrel.
Is the idea to cover the plants ENTIRELY with dirt and plant more potatoes on top for several layers, or putting enough dirt that it forces the first batch of potatoes to grow even higher along the barrel?
And is there a limit on this technique? Is it only potatoes, or all root vegetables fair game ie carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, turnips, radishes, ginger, turmeric, etc etc?
If yes to all the above, literally getting 10 barrels
