You should always have a knife with you and having one that is capable of batoning in an emergency situation is a bonus and could be a lifesaver. However, just because a knife is capable of something does not mean that should be its primary use. It is reckless to use a knife in this way in any other circumstance than an emergency. You need to minimize the risk of damage to your tools. Broken equipment = higher chance of death.
