OP here. Trying to stay away from a hard-shell, guys. For heavy rain I have a golite poncho. Equally I prefer layering to get my warmth. If I had the money I'd buy a double layer ventile jacket and be done with it. But they have their own problems; impossible to wash properly with soap; stiff as a board when soaking; more fragile compared to poly-cotton.
