I have been experimenting with other manufacturer's ferro-rods and in general it's slightly harder to get a decent spark out of them and the amount of sparks are fewer than from OG Firesteel. On the plus side, other manufacturers often offer larger, longer and thicker models. The military ones that have a small block of magnesium to go with it (pictured) are good in principle as you have reliable tinder in the same package, but the ferro-rods attached to them are usually fairly thin and the glue fails relatively easily and the rod snaps away from the block..
Most of the other manufacturer's stuff works well enough (stay away from the chinese ones, those are crap) but I'd still trust the swedish ones better.
