This is the best time of the year to go, the colder it is outside the better chance you have of seeing smoke. The best places to see the smoke are right behind the graveyard, at the top of the hill.
I forget what the main road is called, but you'll be heading north and just before you hit the town the road makes a very sharp bend. It's at this bend where the abandoned road is, it's just over a hill. I suggest you leave yourself enough time to get out and walk around, and if you have a 4x4 vehicle you can drive on all kinds of mine roads.
Also, you should watch a movie called "Made in USA" it features centralia in the 1980s when the houses were still there.
