i ended up redoing the mortar, because i realized i really did add too much water, its finicky in that respect, even a drop can over do it
it was an easy cleanup though, and after redoing it, i used a hair dryer to stiffed the mortar to be the shape i needed
after that, i put it in a food dehydrator i remembered i had, and dried it out thoroughly, the mortar is rock hard now
the pipes smoke perfectly fine, and the mortar takes up all the unused space in the pipe nicely, so it saves me on tobacco
the large pipe is also one that had it's stem come out, when pulling the tip, so the mortar helped fill the void after i trimmed excess, so that doubly works too
