Anyways, safest way to remove a leech is to find its head (the smaller end) and take something thin and flat (credit card, long fingernail, knife blade, etc.) and try to gently slide it between the leech and your skin. Once the seal is broken, you can just flick it away.
Leeches don't bury any body parts into you while feeding like ticks do, but just ripping them off can tear their heads or jaws off, and can cause serious infection in the bite wound. Likewise, if they're disturbed while feeding (grabbed, burned, etc.) they might vomit in the open wound, which can also become infected.
Always wash a leech bite thoroughly.
